Mike Trout out 6-8 weeks with grade 2 calf strain
The Los Angeles Angels were dealt a massive blow.
The team announced that superstar outfielder Mike Trout will be sidelined for the next 6-8 weeks after suffering a calf strain during the team’s 7-4 win over the Cleveland Indians on Monday.
He sustained the injury when jogging while rounding third base during a routine pop fly to end the bottom of the first inning.
“I’ve never felt anything like this before…I felt a pop.” said Trout prior to be put on the injured list.
The 29-year old is in the midst of yet another exceptional season, hitting .333 with a 1.090 OPS, eight homers and 18 RBI through 36 games.
The loss is devastating to the Angels, but the mentality in the clubhouse is next man up.
“It’s really unfortunate, obviously,” said Angels manager Joe Maddon.
“You never wanna hear that about any of your players, especially a player to the caliber of Michael. The way I’m looking at it is this — other guys are gonna get opportunities right now to help us ascend into this race properly, and by the time Mike gets back, he’s ready to go and really fresh into August, September and the playoffs. It’s difficult. I’ve been around it before, I’ve lost good players before in races, and then they’ve come back at the right time and all of a sudden things work out really well. He’ll be one of the best August acquisitions in history.”
The Angels are currently 4th in the AL West with a 18-23 record.
