Cubs win the Seiya Suzuki sweepstakes
It looks like the most highly sought-after Japanese baseball star is finally off the market.
According to reports, Free agent outfielder Seiya Suzuki has agreed to sign with the Chicago Cubs on a five-year, $85 million contract with a full no-trade clause.
The 27-year-old had spent his entire professional in the Nippon Professional Baseball league in Japan prior to his decision to take his talents to North America.
In 10 combined seasons with the Hiroshima Toyo Carp, Suzuki won five Central League Golden Glove awards, and six Best Nine Awards (which is given to best player at each position). He was also a two-time Central League Batting Champion, two-time Central League OBP Leader, and a five-time NPB All-Star.
He is fresh off one of the best seasons of his career in 2021, where he posted a .317 batting average, 1.072 OPS, 38 homers and 88 RBI over a span of 134 games.
