Luongo passes Belfour to move into third on NHL all-time wins list

After making 36 saves for the Florida Panthers in their 4-3 win over the Colorado Avalanche on Monday, Roberto Luongo surpassed the legendary Ed Belfour to move into third all-time on the NHL goalie wins list.

Luongo didn’t think too much about his accomplishment following the game, and was more pleased that the team escaped the Pepsi Center with a much-needed road victory.

“I’m happier we got the two points,” said Luongo.

“It’s a big road win for our club against a team that’s one of the good teams. They had won four in a row, so it was a gutsy effort for our club in a road game in a tough building.”

The 39-year old, who is currently playing in his 20th NHL season, has accumulated 485 wins, 2.51 goals-against average and a .919 save percentage in 1033 combined games with the Vancouver Canucks and Panthers.

He is also a six-time NHL all-star, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, and holds NHL records for most saves in a single season and most regular season overtime wins. He needs 67 more wins to pass former Montreal Canadiens, Colorado Avalanche great Patrick Roy for second overall.

He still has three years remaining on his contract with an average annual value of $5,333,333 following the 2018/19 campaign.
