Rangers Hall of Fame winger Rod Gilbert passes away at 80
The hockey world has lost another legend of the game.
Hockey Hall of Fame forward Rod Gilbert, who spent his entire career with the New York Rangers organization and helped Team Canada win the 1972 Summit Series, was pronounced dead on Sunday due to undisclosed reasons. He was 80 years old.
“I am deeply saddened by the passing of Rod Gilbert — one of the greatest Rangers to ever play for our organization and one of the greatest ambassadors the game of hockey has ever had,” said Rangers owner James Dolan.
“While his on-ice achievements rightly made him a Hall of Famer, it was his love for the Rangers and the people of New York that endeared him to generations of fans and forever earned him the title, ‘Mr. Ranger.’”
Gilbert amassed 406 goals, 615 assists and a plus-36 rating over a span of 18 seasons and 1,065 regular-season games from 1960-1978.
Mr. Ranger was also an eight-time NHL All-Star, a recipient of the 1976 Bill Masterton Trophy, and holds the franchise record for goals and points.
