Leafs reportedly interested in Flyers defenceman Justin Braun

It’s no secret that the Toronto Maple Leafs are looking for some help on the blueline as they head into the final stretch of the season. Apparently a notable Philadelphia Flyers defenceman has caught their eye.

According to TSN’s Pierre LeBrun, the team is interested in acquiring veteran defenceman Justin Braun as an insurance plan in case some of their notable targets become unattainable.

The 35-year old, who is a pending unrestricted free agent, has recorded four goals, nine assists and a plus-1 rating while averaging 19:59 of ice time through 49 games this season.

At 6’2, the Leafs see Braun as a solid big-bodied depth defenceman that can help fill out their defensive core, and provide injury insurance in case Jake Muzzin or another notable defenceman finds himself on the injured list come playoff time.

Making a trade will be tricky for the Leafs, as they are in a cap crunch and have barely over $250,000 available in cap space. They will have to get creative if they hope to acquire a big name.

The NHL’s Trade Deadline is March 21.
