The St. Louis Blues have made a big-time acquisition with just a little over a week until the 2019/2020 NHL season gets underway.

The team announced Tuesday that they have acquired star defenceman Justin Faulk and a 2020 fifth-round pick from the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for veteran defenceman Joel Edmundson, Swedish forward prospect Dominik Bokk and a 2021 seventh-round draft pick.

Immediately following the trade, the Blues signed Faulk to an eight-year, $45.5 million contract extension worth an average annual value of $6.5 million.

“We are excited to add Justin to our core group for the next eight years,” said Blues General Manager Doug Armstrong.

“He’s a Top-4 defenseman who averages over 23 minutes a game and we are confident he will be a strong addition to our club.”

The 27-year old, who was selected 37th overall in the 2010 NHL Draft, has posted 85 goals, 173 assists and a minus-100 rating over a span of 559 career games.

He spent his entire eight-year NHL career with the Hurricanes organization prior to this deal.
