Auston Matthews passes Rick Vaive for most goals in a single season by a Leafs player
Auston Matthews has made Toronto Maple Leafs history!
The 24-year old superstar put on a show in Dallas last night, scoring two goals – including a jaw dropping overtime winner – to lead the Leafs to a 4-3 overtime victory over the Stars on Tuesday night.
By doing that: he netted goals 55 and 56 on the season, which puts him past Rick Vaive (who scored 54 during the 1981/82 season) for most single season goals in a franchise history.
“Just a lot of emotions running through your mind, I guess, and just running through your body when you see the puck go in. I don’t know really what else to say. But it was definitely exciting and a really fun moment” said Matthews about breaking the franchise record.
Matthews has reached the 56-goal mark in just his 66th game of the season and the team’s 71st game. He has 11 more games to add to the total, and has a great chance at becoming the first Leafs player to ever reach the 60-goal mark.
