Longtime NHL forward Alex Steen is hanging up the skates for good due to a back injury he sustained last season that has resulted in “multiple levels of degenerative herniated discs of his lumbar spine”.

The 36-year old officially announced his retirement from the NHL on Thursday.

“This has been an emotional process…But as I look back on my years in hockey, I would like to thank our organization, our city, our fans and my teammates as I am so proud of all the teams I was part of” said Steen.

Steen leaves the game with 1,018 career games and 15 seasons split between the St. Louis Blues and Toronto Maple Leafs. During his career, he posted 245 goals, 377 assists and a plus-42 rating to go along with a Stanley Cup title we won with the Blues in 2019.
